Landscapes hold meaning. To design the land is to negotiate the relationship between people and place.

In a time when a deeper understanding of our connection to the natural world is ever more urgent, landscape architects are actively engaged in returning to every person the right to open access to healthy ground to which they feel connected. We meet this challenge with optimism and are dedicated to bringing individuals, institutions and communities closer to the land they inhabit. We believe that craft is a sign of respect. We believe that beauty is illuminating.

On Place

Fit, Phenomena, Abstraction

Our work is founded on a deep and particular understanding of the places we have the privilege of working — their histories, ecologies and communities. We begin with observation, the careful documentation of the traces of natural and cultural systems that lay across the land. We engage the power of abstraction to define place and deliver a more immersive experience of the phenomena of the natural world.

We seek to reflect the truth of a place, past and present, and project that toward the future to meet the needs of the land and the aspirations of our clients and their communities. We unearth stories and build new narratives in the belief that doing so earns a fuller understanding of the land and creatures with whom we share space.

Through Design

Curiosity, Conversation, Craft

Design is a mode of inquiry and a means to act. Our work is exacting. We embrace the expressive power of restraint to create refined and resonant spaces across which plays the joyful chaos of contemporary life. The work is both structural — creating frameworks for movement, viewing, gathering and rest — and sculptural — with a strong focus on shaping the land and the close experience of plants. In our relationships, we prize conversation and collaboration. Through them, we unearth ideas and discover aspirational, achievable solutions to problems at all scales and levels of complexity.

We both deeply enjoy and take seriously the responsibility of building on the land as we seek alignment between beauty and durability in every project. Water, plants and soil are our medium — elements both distinct and inextricable. They remind us that when you’re working on the land, change is inherent — at the scale of the seasons, of years, of generations. We know that successful landscapes do not just embrace change, they anticipate it, recognizing that creating poetry in the work is also about letting go.

We believe in the promise of what great landscape architecture can accomplish. We are inspired daily to become ever more skilled at delivering unique work that empowers our clients to align their world with their dreams for the future. As we navigate the complexities of working in an age of rapid change and increasing uncertainty, we lean into our decades of experience, our relentless curiosity and our belief in the revelatory power of projects that forge deeper connections to the land, that promise brighter tomorrows.

We work to create a better world.
