Storm King Art Center

Mountainville, New York

Reed Hilderbrand first traveled to Storm King to assess and respond to the declining sugar maples (Acer saccharum ‘Green Mountain’) composing Maple Allee, one of the three significant allées planted by William A. Rutherford for founders Peter Stern and Ralph Ogden. While we replanted the allée as Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica), artist Jean Shin created Allee Gathering from the felled maples. Trust earned through this project led to collaborations with multiple artists and finally Reed Hilderbrand’s appointment as landscape architect to a team responsible for creating a new arrival to this extraordinary collection of works and land.
