Tanglewood Linde Center for Music and Learning

Sited on a ridge overlooking the Stockbridge Bowl and Ozawa Hall, this sequence of studio pavilions, designed in collaboration with William Rawn Architects, is the new home for year-round education and event programming at Tanglewood.

A cultural and musical respite from city life, Tanglewood Music Center has hosted notable musicians and engaged its adoring public for generations through the experience of music in nature. The new Tanglewood Learning Institute will expand upon and strengthen that mission through year-round events and educational opportunities, based at the the Linde Center. The multi-use, multi-season building complex provides state-of-the-art rehearsal and concert venues, as well as a home for multimedia education and lecture programs.

Expanding the Legacy Campus

Our work integrates the new facilities into the landscape and life of the bucolic Tanglewood campus, while establishing a dedicated vehicular entry from Hawthorne Road and welcoming pedestrians through the revitalized Ozawa Gate. The sequence of splaying pavilions is connected along a serpentine path, winding carefully around and beneath the shade of an iconic, 100-year-old red oak tree. Each of the studios was placed to leverage views of the broader Berkshire landscape, allowing music and education to spill out onto the expansive and rolling lawns.

Engaging Year-round Programming

The project expands the Tanglewood campus to the east, establishing a new center of gravity in complement to the iconic Shed and Ozawa Hall. What was once envisioned as a single, 40,000 square foot facility is now a micro-campus of its own, transforming the previously seasonal institution into a year-round program.
