The Great Island Master Plan envisions a new public green space within a 60-acre historic estate acquired by the Town of Darien on the Connecticut coast of Long Island Sound. Offering 1.5 miles of dynamic coastline access, sandy beaches, rock outcroppings and diverse habitat, the unique features of the site provide an unparalleled opportunity to create a vibrant public amenity for users of all ages.
In 2024, the Town of Darien appointed Reed Hilderbrand and a local, multi-disciplinary team of consultants to reimagine this historically significant landscape into an ecologically sustainable public space that connects the community to the water. Informed by the Town’s commitment to thoughtful urban planning, the Master Plan incorporates sustainable development and community-driven initiatives aligned with conservation and recreation goals.
The Master Plan shapes a vibrant, public space, one which balances activation and preservation without compromising the unique character of the site. The result of a year-long visioning and planning exercise with an emphasis on fostering community connections through activation and environmental stewardship, the Master Plan seeks to unite the Town of Darien by creating meaningful relationships with the land through a shared sense of belonging.
A phased implementation plan informed by community input allows for simultaneous access and Town investment. This long-term approach supports sustainable development without foreclosing potential futures which include possible renovation of historic structures. With a vision of welcoming all, the Master Plan prioritizes the following:
- Visitor access throughout the site and to the water, with parking, basic amenities, and a looping circuit of paths.
- Activation of structures in centralized, lower investment buildings, such as the Carriage House.
- Habitat restoration and prioritization of landscape experiences, with management of invasives and replanting.
Adopted by the Town of Darien in August 2025, the Great Island Vision, Master Plan and Concept are available here.
